Civic Virtue Seminar Addresses "The Crisis of Democratic Authority"

"The Crisis of Democratic Authority," a talk by Jean Bethke Elshtain, is the next public program of the Ethics Center's Civic Virtue Seminar. The Laura Spelman Rockefeller Professor of Social and Political Ethics at University of Chicago Divinity School, Elshtain is scheduled to speak Thursday, Jan. 15, at 7 p.m. at SCU's Benson Center Williman Room.

The Civic Virtue Seminar was initiated to "offer insights about what happens to society's fundamental political and moral relationships when individuals do not embrace their communities," according to Philip Kain, a seminar coordinator and professor of philsophy at SCU.

The seminar, co-coordinated by Associate Professor of Philosophy Christopher Kulp, brings nationally known scholars to Santa Clara to meet with a select group of faculty from SCU and other universities. In addition, the scholars give public presentations and are available as resources to the local community. On March 5, the speaker will be William Galston, director of the Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy, University of Maryland, and former director for domestic policy to President Clinton.
