Approaching Ethics

Does ethics matter? Is it just a matter of personal beliefs? Can it be taught? How should an ethical question be approached?

These are just a few of the issues addressed in "Approaching Ethics," now available from the Markkula Center. Michael J. Meyer, SCU associate professor of philosophy, has developed this booklet along with Center Director Tom Shanks, S.J., and Associate Director Claire Andre. It includes updated articles from Issues in Ethics, as well as new sections written specifically for "Approaching Ethics."

Meyer, presidential professor of ethics and the common good, was appointed in 1994 by University President Paul Locatelli, S.J., to work closely with the Center on faculty development and other programs. Currently, he is, among other things, writing a number of papers including "The Simple Dignity of Non-human Life," "When Not to Claim Your Rights," "Dignity as a Modern Virtue," and "Tolerance Within Close-knit Communities."
