Maya Lin

At twenty-one, while an undergraduate student at the Yale School of Architecture, Maya Lin won a competition to design the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Her design, which incorporates the names of more than fifty-eight thousand American soldiers who died or went missing during the war, initially met with controversy but has since become one of the most admired and visited monuments in the world. Her other designs, many of which incorporate natural forms, include her memorial to the Civil Rights movement that was dedicated in 1990 in Montgomery, Alabama, and the Women's Table, a monument commemorating Yale University women. In 2003, Lin served on the selection jury for the World Trade Center Site Memorial Competition. Amongst her other accomplishments, Lin was also elected to the National Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, New York in 2005.
