Dr. C. Everett Koop
Born in Brooklyn in 1916, Dr. C. Everett Koop enjoyed a
long career as a leading pediatric surgeon at Children's
Hospital in Philadelphia and as a professor of medicine
at the University of Pennsylvania from 1948 to 1981. In
1981, Koop was appointed surgeon general of the United States,
a position in which he became a strong, independent voice
on the AIDS crisis and the perils of smoking.
The recipient of thirty-five honorary doctorates, Koop is
now Elizabeth DeCamp McInerny Professor at Dartmouth College.
